How to Make a Whistle Kite

(2026), Workshop Facilitator — PHIVE Paramatta
Lunar New Year Program | NSW, AUSTRALIA

Commissioned by PHIVE, Parramatta NSW, I hosted a workshop exploring conceptual kite-making and kite play. Inspired by ancient Vietnamese kite traditions of the diều sáo (whistling kites), and Vietnamese folk art, the workshop invites participants to create a stylised as a whistle kite. Using mulberry paper, dowels, string, and bells and markers, participants emulated traditional materials and techniques used in Vietnam.

More than a childhood pastime, kite flying holds a deeply rooted history in Vietnam. Diều sáo is one of the few musical kites in the world and is a testament to the profound connection between the immortal and mortal realms, ancestral ties, and the celebration of new beginnings and the Lunar New Year.
